Jolly Disposition

Jay Cutler

ESPN’s Rick Reilly recently came up with a good line concerning the dour demeanor of Chicago Bears quarterback Jay Cutler. Reilly quipped, “For a guy from Santa Claus, Indiana, he’s the least jolly person I’ve ever met.”

Christians should be jolly people. The Bible says, “Be joyful in hope…” (Rom.12:12) and “Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice!” (Phil.4:4). Yet some Christians give the impression that they were baptized in pickle juice and that instead of a communion wafer, they mistakenly popped a lemon wedge into their mouth!

We should be the most joyful people anyone could ever meet, especially when you consider where we come from. We come from the cross, where Jesus died to save us (1 Cor.1:18). We come from the waters of baptism, where our sins were washed away (Acts 22:16).

The announcers of ESPN probably aren’t going to pay much attention to your life, but many people will. Let your joy in Christ be evident to all of them.
