My Uncle Herman had a dog that could play checkers, but he wasn’t all that impressed with his pet’s ability. He said, “I don’t know why everybody thinks that dog is so smart. I can beat him 2 out of 3 games!”
Uncle Herman’s son, Roscoe, was a lot like his father. He liked to brag about his intellect. He once told me, “I bought a jigsaw puzzle that said on the box that it was for 4-6 years. I finished it in less than a month!”
Perhaps we should take a more humble approach to assessing our own abilities. Romans 12:3 says, “For by the grace given me I say to every one of you: Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought, but rather think of yourself with sober judgment, in accordance with the measure of faith God has given you.”
