Numbers

numbersOnce a year my wife and I go to a health fair sponsored by a local hospital. For a nominal fee we get a detailed lab report based on blood samples that we give. We get the results of our tests a couple of weeks after the health fair.

When I received my results a few weeks ago, one of the numbers jumped off the page and startled me. My fasting blood sugar level was 319. The normal range is 65-99. Needless to say, I immediately scheduled an appointment with my doctor. Within a couple of days, I was taking medication, checking my blood twice a day and watching my diet more closely than ever before. My numbers soon came down to an acceptable level.

My wife’s blood sugar was high also. At least according to the report that highlighted her number the same way it did mine. Her number was—are you ready for this?—101. Of course 101 is nothing to be concerned about. It’s just barely over the normal level. Her “high” blood sugar number was not nearly as bad as mine.

Unfortunately, this is the same way some people look at the sin in their life. Their sin isn’t nearly as bad as someone else’s, therefore they don’t have a sin problem. The thing is, we all have a sin problem. “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23) and “…the wages of sin is death…” (Romans 6:23). The little lie you told, or the time you let your temper get the best of you, or the extra change that you knowingly kept when the cashier made a mistake…Any of those sins separate you from God just as surely as if you had lied under oath, killed someone in anger or used a gun to rob a bank. All sin that is unforgiven separates us from God.

Thankfully, Jesus remedies that situation. “For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” (Romans 6:23). No matter what your “sin numbers” are, Jesus can take those sins away and allow you to live with God—in this life, and for all eternity!

Doing Your Best

Suspected robber

Suspected robber

A man robbed a bank in New York City yesterday and got away with over $1,200. It happened at the Santander Bank in Queens shortly after 2:00pm. The robber, wearing a grey hoodie, passed a note to the teller demanding money. The suspect, a man who appeared to be in his mid-20s, is still at large even though he did not have the speediest of getaways. Did I mention that he pulled off this caper while in a wheelchair?

Even though we strongly disagree with this young man’s choice of occupation, you have to admire his spunk! He is not letting his disability prevent him from reaching his goals.

If he ever decides to channel that energy in the right direction, there’s no telling what he might accomplish.

“Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with all your might…”—Ecclesiastes 9:10.

Not Quite Synonyms

synonymsIs there a difference between the words “complete” and “finished”? While they might be considered synonyms, these words might have some different connotations.

One man insisted that there is a distinction between those two words. When asked to explain, he said: “If a man chooses to marry the right woman, he is complete. However, if he chooses to marry the wrong woman, he is finished! And if he marries the right woman and she later catches him with the wrong woman, he is completely finished!”

“Husbands, in the same way be considerate as you live with your wives, and treat them with respect as the weaker partner and as heirs with you of the gracious gift of life, so that nothing will hinder your prayers.”—1 Peter 3:7.

That’s What It Means!

unity candleWedding ceremonies sometime include the lighting of a unity candle. A minister at a wedding rehearsal was explaining the symbolism of the unity candle ceremony.

“After the middle candle is lit, blowing out the two side candles means the two become one,” he said.

“Oh,” a guest admitted in surprise. “I always thought it meant ‘no more flames.’”

It means that too.

“Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her.”—Ephesians 5:25.

Contemporary Wedding

William Bennett

William Bennett

Former Education Secretary William Bennett once attended a contemporary wedding where the bride and groom did not promise to stay together “til death do we part”. Instead, in their wedding vows, the couple pledged to remain together “as long as love shall last.”

This caused Bennett to say, “I sent paper plates as my wedding gift.”

It’s sad to think that there are so many “contemporary” marriages today. Many couples don’t take the commitment of marriage as seriously as they should, and the result is sad. Very sad.

“Has not the Lord made them one? In flesh and spirit they are his. And why one? Because he was seeking godly offspring. So guard yourself in your spirit, and do not break faith with the wife of your youth.”—Malachi 2:15.

You Can’t Hide

hurricane damagePaul Harvey once told about a lady who made a big decision after Hurricane Andrew devastated south Florida several years ago. Patricia Christy was waiting in line for food when she vowed that she was going to get out of the state. She was going to leave on the first plane out. Patricia was determined to get as far away from the horror of hurricane damage as she possibly could and have a restful vacation.

Patricia Christy spent part of her Hawaii vacation standing in line for fresh water, having just gone through another hurricane!

Like they say, you can run, but you can’t hide. We all have to experience trials in life. It’s so much better to face them with Jesus on your side!

“Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.”—Matthew 6:34.

Worst Day

pacifierClara Null wrote about a bad day she once had:

“It was one of the worst days of my life: the washing machine broke down, the telephone kept ringing, my head ached, and the mail carrier brought a bill I had no money to pay.

Almost to the breaking point, I lifted my one-year-old into his highchair, leaned my head against the tray, and began to cry.

Without a word, my son took his pacifier out of his mouth and stuck it in mine.”

You are going to have days like that. Thankfully, we have people to comfort us in our time of need.

“Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves have received from God.”—2 Corinthians 1:3-4.

Who’s Responsible?

praying handsWhen a bar opened up for business in a small town, the only church in the community decided to take action. They organized an all-night prayer meeting. The church members asked God to burn down the bar. Within a few minutes, lightning struck the bar, and it burned to the ground. The owner, who had heard about the prayer meeting, sued the church. The church denied responsibility.

After hearing both sides, the judge said, “It seems that wherever the guilt may lie, the owner of the bar believes in prayer, while the church doesn’t!”

Do you believe in the power of prayer?

“…The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective.”—James 5:16.

Tough Life

lucky dogA hand-lettered sign nailed to a telephone pole said, “Lost dog with three legs, blind in left eye, missing right ear, tail broken and recently castrated. Answers to the name of Lucky.”

Maybe you’ve had a time when you felt like Lucky. Sometimes life seems to beat us down and leave us wounded and hurting. It makes you wonder what God has in mind to allow you to go through such suffering. It’s often difficult to see the purpose of trials and tribulations.

We may not get all the answers we would like to have, but the Bible does give us some advice and encouragement for troublesome times. “Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance.”—James 1:2-3.

Time for Action!

golferA golfer’s errant shot ended up on an ant hill. He squared up, took a big swing—and missed. Thousands of innocent ants were killed. The hacker took another swing—and missed again. Another wave of ants was destroyed. Panic-stricken insects scurried everywhere.

One ant finally took charge. “Follow me!” he shouted with authority. Another ant yelled, “But where are we going?”

He pointed to the golf ball sitting in front of them. “There! If we don’t get on the ball, we’re going to die!”

Maybe it’s time for all of us to get on the ball!

“To this end I labor, struggling with all his energy, which so powerfully works in me.”—Colossians 1:28.
