Definition of a Father

Father's Day

A father is a thing that is forced to endure childbirth, without an anesthetic.

A father is a thing that growls when it feels good—and laughs when it’s scared half to death.

A father never feels entirely worthy of the worship in his child’s eyes. He’s never quite the hero his daughter thinks, never quite the man his son believes him to be, and this worries him sometimes. So he works too hard to try and smooth the rough places in the road for those of his own who will follow him.

Fathers grow old faster than other people. They have to stand at the train station and wave goodbye to the uniform that climbs aboard. And while mothers can cry where it shows, fathers stand there and beam on the outside—while they’re dying on the inside. Fathers have very stout hearts, so they have to be broken sometimes or no one would know what’s inside of them.

Fathers are what give daughters away to other men who aren’t nearly good enough so they can have grandchildren who are smarter than anybody else’s.

They hurry away from the breakfast table, off to the arena, which is sometimes called an office, a workshop or a farm. There, with calloused, practiced hands they tackle the dragon with three heads: Weariness, Work, and Monotony. And they never quite win the fight, but they never give up.

Knights in shining armor—fathers in shiny work clothes—there’s little difference, as they march away to work each work day.

What You Deserve

Erik Spoelstra

Erik Spoelstra

After his team’s 36-point loss to San Antonio in the NBA Finals Tuesday night, Miami Heat coach Erik Spoelstra had this to say: “You usually get what you deserve in this league.” It was a concise way of saying that they were beaten so soundly because they didn’t put forth a very good effort.

Sometimes life is just like that—you get what you deserve. This is not always the case, because life sometimes isn’t fair. But a lot of times people get what they have earned in life, whether it’s good or bad.

The Bible says, “Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows.” (Galatians 6:7).

Think of how often this principle proves to be true. A person who spends himself into debt must eventually pay up or forfeit his property. A habitual liar will get caught up in her own web of deceit. Someone who chooses violence will himself suffer harm.

On the positive side, those who sow seeds of love, faithfulness and righteousness usually reap the rewards of their good deeds. They generally enjoy success in life because they have made the right choices and have done the hard labor. Their rewards are shared by their family, community and church.

What kinds of seeds are you sowing today?

Protection from the Storm

Tim Samaras

Tim Samaras

On Friday, May 31, 2013, Tim Samaras, his son Paul and their co-worker Carl Young were killed in a tornado in Oklahoma. They were storm chasers, trying to get as close to the tornado as they could in order to gather scientific information. They had devoted years to understanding how killer storms behave. These men hoped that their work might help protect some people from being harmed by future storms. Jim Samaras said this of his brother Tim—“At the end of the day, he wanted to save lives and he gave the ultimate sacrifice for that.”

Jesus died in order to save us from a future storm called Judgment Day. He gave the ultimate sacrifice to save us from sin and its awful penalty.

“Since we have now been justified by his blood, how much more shall we be saved from God’s wrath through him!”—Romans 5:9.

I Know that Guy!

Tim Duncan

Tim Duncan

My brother got on an elevator in a Charlotte hotel with a fellow who towered over him. Looking up, he asked, “Do you play basketball?”

“A little bit”, was the reply.

When my brother later told his friends about this encounter, they informed him that the San Antonio Spurs were in town, and that some of them were standing right across the lobby.

“There he is”, my brother said. “That’s the one I spoke with.”

“That’s Tim Duncan!” they said.

Later on, my brother and a friend were trying to get on the elevator, when someone held the door for them. Who was it? You guessed it. Tim Duncan!

My brother, trying to play it cool, said, “Thanks, Tim”.

Sometimes we pretend we know people better than we really do.

Sometimes we do that with Jesus.

“I want to know Christ…”—Philippians 3:10.

The Purge

“The Purge” is a movie currently playing in theaters. It is about a time in the not-too-distant future when the leaders of the United States have proclaimed that one night every year there will be no consequences for anyone who perpetrates acts of violence. Murder is actually encouraged to purge America of “undesirables” such as the homeless, the weak and those who contribute nothing to society. It is said that this culling will improve society by lowering unemployment and helping the economy.

Most people think that the idea is so repugnant that nothing like this could ever happen in our country.

I’m thinking maybe it could.

Think abortion.

Faithful Observance

My great-great grandmother prepared communion for her little country church for at least 47 years. When she could no longer perform this duty, my grandmother took over for her, and she carried on this family tradition for another 40 years. That’s quite a record of continual service from one family!

Christians all over the world have been faithfully observing the Lord’s Supper for nearly 2,000 years. When we take communion together, we carry on a tradition that God’s family has been participating in for a long time. Let’s continue the tradition, and pass it along to those who follow after us.

Never Enough

George Karl

George Karl

Denver Nuggets head coach George Karl guided his team through a fine regular season and into the playoffs. He was rewarded for his accomplishment by being named the NBA’s coach of the year.  The future seemed promising for Karl.  However, after an early exit from the playoffs, Karl was fired yesterday, just a few weeks after being honored as the league’s best coach.

How quickly our fortunes can change! Paul and Barnabas were once the objects of worship one minute, only to be deemed worthy of death the next (Acts 14).

The world seems to be constantly asking, “What have you done for me lately?” Many people seem to buy into that philosophy, basing their worth on their accomplishments. They think that they can earn their way into heaven through their good deeds.

The trouble with that idea is that you never can know if you’ve done enough to measure up. What if your performance isn’t good enough? What if you left something undone? Those are the uneasy questions you are left with in a works-based approach to salvation.

Thankfully, God doesn’t base our salvation on our works! Jesus did the work for us when he died on the cross to pay for our sins. The grace that we have through our faith in him is all that we need to be saved!

For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God.”—Ephesians 2:8

Sweet Aroma

Honeysuckle

Honeysuckle

At a recent high school baseball game, I noticed a sweet aroma in the air. Looking around, I could not immediately locate the source of the smell. Then I saw some honeysuckle beyond the left field fence. It had to be what was responsible for the nice fragrance in the air. This was pretty impressive, since I was along the right field line, a good 250 feet away from the honeysuckle.

I was reminded of what Paul told the church at Corinth. He said that we Christians are the aroma of Christ. Our lives should give off a fragrance that attracts people to Jesus.

14 But thanks be to God, who always leads us as captives in Christ’s triumphal procession and uses us to spread the aroma of the knowledge of him everywhere. 15 For we are to God the pleasing aroma of Christ among those who are being saved and those who are perishing. 16 To the one we are an aroma that brings death; to the other, an aroma that brings life. And who is equal to such a task?–2 Corinthians 2:14-16.

My team lost. That stunk.

But you get the point.

Queen for a Day

Denise Garrido

Denise Garrido

On Saturday, May 25, 2013, judges for Miss Universe Canada awarded the crown to Denise Garrido—and then took it away from her a day later. A mistake in the scoring had erroneously given her the title. During the validation of the computerized scoring results, a typographical error was discovered. The crown went to Riza Santos instead.

Garrido reported that her heart sank when she was told the news, but said, “I will always have the memory of being the 24-hour queen.”

As long as we remain faithful to Jesus, we have no fear of losing the crown of glory that awaits us in heaven. Our reward is certain!

“I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.”—Philippians 3:14.

Loving Message

girlfriend

Cpl. Thomas “Cotton” Jones was killed by a Japanese sniper in 1944. He left behind a diary of his experience in World War II. His last request was that the diary be given to the girl he loved—Laura Mae Davis.

Laura did get to read the diary, but not until nearly 70 years later. She was stunned to see Jones’ diary on display in a museum in New Orleans. The museum scanned the diary and mailed a copy to her. She is now able to read about what Jones describes as “…all my love for Laura Mae for whom my heart is completely filled.”

It would have been sad if Laura Mae had not ever had the chance to read of her old boyfriend’s love for her. And it is sad that a lot of people never take the time to open the Bible and read there of God’s great love for them.

“For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.”—John 3:16.
