Craving the Word

Bible reading

William McPherson had a charge of dynamite go off right in front of him. He lost his hands, his eyes and the feeling in parts of his face. Hungry for the word of God, McPherson got a copy of the Braille Bible, but his artificial hands could not enable him to read it. He tried placing his lips on the Bible, but they were too numb to be of any help. He finally discovered that he had enough feeling in his tongue to be able to read the Braille. The metal left his lips and tongue bleeding and sore, but he continued to read. Slowly and methodically he worked his way through the Bible. Over the course of the next 65 years, William McPherson read the Bible through four times with his tongue!

Have you read your Bible today?

Your Super Bowl

nfl_g_flag1_sy_576

The kickoff of this year’s Super Bowl—whatever Roman numeral this one might be—is today. The players participating are looking forward to competing on the biggest stage their sport has to offer. Months of practice and competition have led to this game, and now is their time to shine.

It seems that a lot of people go through life never realizing that their time to shine has arrived. They see life as a practice session with little meaning. They don’t understand the importance of the opportunities they have to serve God every day. They underestimate the impact they can have by living a vibrant life of faith.

Don’t waste your life sitting on the sidelines. Get in the game! Give it your best shot! This is your Super Bowl! This is your time to shine!

“…You shine like stars in the universe as you hold out the word of life…”—Philippians 2:15-16.

Real Relationship

Manti Te'o

Manti Te’o

Notre Dame football star Manti Te’o is apparently the victim of a cruel hoax. He was led to believe that he had a girlfriend, Lennay Kekua. He had seen pictures of a woman whom he believed he had spoken with on the phone and communicated with online, but Te’o had never met Kekua in person. The “relationship” was virtual. He did not really have a girlfriend.

It’s sad that a man could be duped in such a way that he thought he had a romantic relationship that never really existed. Sadder still is the fact that many people have fooled themselves into thinking they have a real relationship with Jesus Christ, when in fact they have no such relationship.

“Not everyone who says to me, “Lord, Lord,” will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only he who does the will of my Father who is in heaven…I will tell them plainly, “I never knew you. Away from me, you evil-doers!”—Matthew 7:21-23.

Unfinished Business

House 583

I recently drove by a huge house that is about halfway finished. The brick on the house is completed, and the roof has been finished, but it lacks doors and windows. You can see that the inside of the house remains unfinished. A lot of work remains to be done before the house could be livable.

This house has been sitting like this for several years. I don’t know why the project was abandoned, but it seems a shame that so much work and money was invested in it, only to have the effort go to waste.

When Nehemiah and his co-workers were rebuilding the walls of Jerusalem, they nearly abandoned the project when it was halfway finished. Though much progress had been made, there was still a lot of work to be done. The workers were tired, and the threats of their enemies had discouraged them to the point where they didn’t feel like they could continue with this important work (Nehemiah 4:6,10).

Halfway finished is a dangerous place to be. Many couples walk away from a marriage when they are halfway to their 50th wedding anniversary. Some parents bail out in the middle of raising their children. Some people leave the church after faithfully following Jesus for years.

Discouragement has been called one of Satan’s greatest tools. We have to realize this and fight against his evil schemes.

Nehemiah rallied his people, and they succeeded in rebuilding Jerusalem’s walls.

With godly leadership and encouragement, we can get past the dangerous halfway point and successfully complete our mission.

Who knows? Maybe you can be the one who encourages someone else to go on, even though they feel like giving up.

“And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds.”—Hebrews 10:24.

Somewhat Supportive

boy in hospital

Two young boys met for the first time at a surgery center where they would each have minor surgery. As they waited for their operations, they struck up a conversation.

“What are you here for?” one boy asked.

“I’m here to have my tonsils removed.”

“Oh, that won’t be so bad. I had mine removed last year, and it wasn’t such a big deal. You’ll get to eat a lot of ice cream. You’ll be fine.

“Thanks”, replied the other boy. “How about you? What are you having done?”

“I’m here to be circumcised.”

“Ooooh! That’s too bad!”

“Why do you say that?”

“I was circumcised when I was 3 days old, and I couldn’t walk for a year!”

“Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves have received from God.”—2 Corinthians 1:3-4.

Helpless

Baby Jessica rescued

Baby Jessica rescued

In 1987, an 18-month-old toddler named Jessica fell into a well in Texas and was stuck 22 feet below the surface of the ground. While rescuers labored around the clock to save her, the nation prayed for “Baby Jessica”. After 55 nerve-wracking hours, she was finally rescued.

Nobody talked about how that brave little girl saved herself. She was totally helpless. There was nothing whatsoever she could do to get herself out of that well. She had to rely totally on her rescuers. Left on her own, she would have perished.

This is the same situation we find ourselves in when it comes to our sinful condition. There is absolutely nothing we can do to save ourselves from our sins; we are completely helpless. We have to rely on Jesus to save us.

“You see, at just the right time, when we were still powerless, Christ died for the ungodly.”—Romans 5:6.

A Good Shepherd

jesus-holding-lamb

The leadership model most frequently used in the Bible is the analogy of a shepherd taking care of his flock. Though much change has occurred over time, no other model has come along to replace this one. Some have tried to substitute political or corporate models, but they all fall woefully short of the beautiful example of the faithful shepherd who lovingly cares for his sheep.

One of best examples of shepherding that I have ever seen occurred a few years ago at the home of a church elder. Charlie and his wife had shown hospitality by inviting some of their church friends over to their house for a pool party.

At one point, a two-year-old boy got a splinter in his foot. Even after the splinter was removed, the little boy was still hurting and needing some attention. So Charlie picked him up to comfort him. The small boy snuggled into the huge man’s shoulder, and before long, all was well in his world once again.

The picture of this godly shepherd comforting one of the smallest members of his flock will be etched in my mind for many years to come. It gives me an example to follow in my own attempts to take care of the flock that God has entrusted to me.

What are some of the best memories you have of someone showing pastoral care to another individual?

“Keep watch over yourselves and all the flock of which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers. Be shepherds of the church of God, which he bought with his own blood.”—Acts 20:28.

Lazy

lazy

Some people have elevated laziness to an art form. I heard about a fellow who designed a straw that was so long that he didn’t even have to lift his glass; he could leave it sitting on the coffee table in front of him and enjoy his favorite beverage and watch TV without lifting a finger.

The photo above shows the work of a road painter who couldn’t be bothered with moving some debris. He chose to take the easiest path to getting the job done, giving no thought to the quality of his work.

Proverbs 10:4 says, “Lazy hands make a man poor; but diligent hands bring wealth.” The apostles taught against laziness, saying that a person who refused to work should not expect to be given something to eat (2 Thessalonians 3:10).

Some people are spiritually lazy. They would rather not raise their voices to worship, lift their hands to serve or pick up their Bibles to read.

The Bible warns against spiritual laziness. Hebrews 6:12 says, “We do not want you to become lazy, but to imitate those who through faith and patience inherit what has been promised.”

OK, break’s over! Back to work!

Sweet Harmony

Emmylou Harris

Emmylou Harris

“You create a new voice with a combination of two or three. It’s always unique and always changing. Collaboration is what I love best about making music.”—Emmylou Harris.

Until I read the above quote, I never thought about how unique the collective voice of a local congregation is when they lift up their voices together to praise the Lord. When you unite with your church family on Sunday morning to sing songs of worship, you create a voice of worship like none other on earth.

Wow!

“Speak to one another with psalms, hymns and spiritual songs. Sing and make music in your heart to the Lord.”—Ephesians 5:19.

Designed

bigfoot

I enjoy watching those television shows that search for Bigfoot. The shows are basically all the same. They interview people who say they have seen such a creature. They examine alleged physical evidence, such as tracks and hair samples. They take a look at film footage and still photos that depict big, hairy beasts. Then the show ends by saying, “We still can’t prove anything.”

On one such show, a Bigfoot enthusiast leading a film crew through a wooded area pointed excitedly to a couple of small trees that were leaning up against a bigger tree, forming a triangle. This expert investigator insisted that the formation had to have been constructed by a strong, intelligent creature.

I wasn’t impressed. I have seen similar configurations in the woods, and decided that the two trees could have randomly fallen together.

What does impress me is the intricate design of the universe. It amazes me to see the wide variety of life on earth and the complex systems that are necessary for life to exist in each individual creature.

Yet some people will insist that the universe wasn’t designed, that it was formed by a series of wildly fortunate random occurrences. This seems a bit far-fetched.

I can’t examine creation without being aware of a Creator.

Can you?

“For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse.”—Romans 1:20.
