Not Quite the Same

fireworksThe fireworks business seems to be flourishing in the southern parts of the United States. Driving through the south you see a lot of advertisements for fireworks to suit your every need. From sparkers to the big boomers, you can get whatever you need to celebrate the next holiday or birthday. On a recent trip to South Carolina, we even saw a sign that said we could purchase fireworks on DVD!

Really!? Do people actually spend money to watch fireworks on television? That seems to fall terribly short of the real thing.

Sort of like staying home from church to watch religious programming.

“Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching.”—Hebrews 10:25.

This Is Not Home

Charles Dutton

Charles Dutton

When Charles Dutton was convicted of manslaughter, not many people thought that he would achieve much in life. However, he made a surprising turnaround. After spending many years in prison, he later became a successful Broadway star. When someone asked him how he could make such a remarkable transition, he replied, “Unlike the other prisoners, I never decorated my cell.”

Charles Dutton had vowed to never think of his cell as home.

We Christians can also achieve great things if we refuse to consider this world our home.

“But our citizenship is in heaven…”—Philippians 3:20.

The Purpose of Tough Times

Emporer Moth Cocoon poss 002A man once found a cocoon of an emperor moth and took it home to watch it emerge. One day a small opening appeared, and for several hours the moth struggled but couldn’t seem to force its body past a certain point.

The man assumed that something must be wrong, and he decided to speed up the process. Taking scissors, he carefully opened up the cocoon. The moth easily emerged. Its body was large and swollen, and its wings were tiny and shriveled.

He expected that the wings would soon spread out, but they never did. Instead of developing a body that could soar in the air, the moth spent its lifetime dragging itself around with its swollen body and small, withered wings.

What the man didn’t realize is that the constricting cocoon and the struggle to pass through its small opening is just what the moth needed to push the fluid from its body and into its wings. It’s God’s way of enabling the moth to mature into the creature he intended it to be. The man’s action was meant to be an act of mercy, but in fact it did the moth irreparable harm. The struggle was exactly what it needed.

“Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance. Perseverance must finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.”—James 1:2-4.

Heed the Warning!

Evacuation-&-Shelter-Signs-92917-baI used to live in a town that had once been devastated by a tornado. Even decades later, people still talked about the storm that had flattened almost the entire town. They taught their children and grandchildren to watch out for severe weather and to take cover whenever threatening weather approached. When the tornado alarm sounded, people headed for their basement. Those who had no safe place to go would rush to the church building, which was always opened up to welcome those who were seeking shelter from the storm.

Not everyone pays such close attention to storm warnings. I was interviewing with a church a few years ago when a tornado siren sounded in the middle of our meeting. I was accustomed to seeing people drop what they were doing and scurrying for cover when they heard this kind of warning. However, these folks had not personally experienced a devastating storm. They made some lighthearted comments about the weather, and we continued with the interview.

The Bible continually teaches us that the wrath of God will one day be poured out on the ungodly. This warning is not to be taken lightly! Heed the warning! Take shelter in Jesus Christ! Only he can keep you safe from the storm that will surely come one day.

Healing is a Priority

hospital_erIf you have ever spent time in the waiting area of a hospital emergency room, you know that life must be put on hold for a while. When a loved one is experiencing a medical emergency, everything else must wait. Appointments are re-scheduled, you don’t go to work, you skip school, etc. Nothing else matters except the well-being of your friend or family member who is suffering and needs help. Doctors are consulted, plans are made and—most important of all—prayers go up to God. Healing is the only thing that matters.

When all of mankind became infected with the spiritual sickness of sin, the only thing that mattered to God was our spiritual healing. He went right to work, preparing the world for Jesus to come and save us. Our heavenly Father made our spiritual healing a priority.

“But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was upon him, and by his wounds we are healed.”—Isaiah 53:5.

Don’t Let Your Guard Down!

Steve Green

Steve Green

Singer Steve Green has spent some time talking to the members of the work crews who set up speakers and spotlights in the auditoriums where his concerts are held. He says, “The fellows I talked to weren’t bothered by the sight of looking down a hundred feet. What they didn’t like, they said, were jobs in buildings that had false ceilings—acoustical tile slung just a couple of feet below the rafters. They were still high in the air, and if they slipped, their weight would smash right through the flimsy tile. But their minds seemed to play tricks on them, lulling them into carelessness.”

In a similar fashion, Satan tries to deceive us into thinking that we won’t get hurt when we fall into sin. That’s why the Bible warns us about his schemes. 1 Peter 5:9 says, “Resist him, standing firm in the faith…”.

Better Choice

fetusThe pro-life movement is showing some strength in the south. Several southern states have recently enacted laws that are greatly restricting access to abortions. It is reported that 19 of the 33 abortion clinics in Texas have closed this year. If a law passed in Mississippi is upheld, that state’s only abortion clinic would have to close. Some are concerned that women in Mississippi might be forced to drive 3 hours or more to have an abortion.

Here’s a thought—these women could give birth to the children they have conceived.

That’s a choice everyone can live with.

“Love never fails…”—1 Corinthians 13:8.

Best Advice

Eric Metaxas

Eric Metaxas

Eric Metaxas is a commentator for Breakpoint.org, a Christian worldview ministry that was established by the late Chuck Colson. Metaxas recently had the privilege of giving the baccalaureate address at Liberty University. He says this about his speech–“My advice to the graduates actually can be summed up in two words; ‘Follow Jesus.’ Obviously, I said more, but everything I did say came back to those two words.”

That’s a simple, yet profound, outline for anyone’s life. You can’t go wrong by following Jesus…ever. You might find yourself in some uncomfortable—even painful—situations. You will have difficulties that you could have avoided by choosing an easier path. You won’t find the world patting you on the back for making the decisions that you will make because you are a Christ-follower.

However, in the end, you will not regret having chosen to follow Jesus. It’s the best advice you could ever heed.

“Come, follow me,” Jesus said, “and I will make you fishers of men.”—Matthew 4:19.

Feeling Like a Champ

Champ-Bailey_Large-932x539I recently celebrated another birthday, and I’m feeling like a champ—“Champ” Bailey, that is. Bailey is a professional football player who is approaching his 36th birthday. That’s old for a football player. Bailey has noticed that he is the oldest player on the New Orleans Saints’ roster except for placekicker Shayne Graham.

Champ says, “If you put me on any team, I’m always going to be the old guy. It’s just something I’ve got to get used to.”

Getting older is something we all have to get used to. With age comes more responsibility to set an example for those who are younger. Along with this responsibility come opportunities to influence others in greater ways than ever before.

So let’s not bemoan the fact that we are getting older. Let’s embrace the possibilities to have a positive impact on others to strengthen the kingdom of God.

“Similarly, encourage the young men to be self-controlled. In everything set them an example by doing what is good…”—Titus 2:6-7.

Scuffed

pennySometimes I find coins on the road or sidewalk when I’m out walking. It’s not enough to make a significant difference in my retirement account, but it still is a small thrill to pick up a coin that has been lost.

A coin that has been run over by traffic numerous times can get quite scuffed up. I recently found a penny that was so beaten up that I could just barely make out the image of Abraham Lincoln.

Life can beat us up so badly that we might sometimes feel like a scuffed up penny. Circumstances beyond our control take a toll on us. People scar us with their harmful words and actions. Sometimes the damage is self-inflicted, due to poor decisions we have made.

Let’s always remember that we are created in God’s image. Genesis 2:27 says, “So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.”

No matter how tarnished that image may become, we are still valuable to God; so much so that he sent Jesus to die for us. “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.”—John 3:16.
