Opened Eyes and Burning Hearts

jesus-with-nail-pierced-hands-1000x400Two followers of Jesus were downhearted as they walked along the road to Emmaus after their leader had been crucified. Their hopes were dashed and they were beyond discouraged. Then Jesus himself came up and walked beside them, but they were kept from recognizing him. Jesus drew them into a discussion about their understanding of what had happened. Then he explained to them from the Scriptures why the events had to occur the way they did.

Later, they began to share a meal with Jesus. “When he was at the table with them, he took bread, gave thanks, broke it and began to give it to them. Then their eyes were opened and they recognized him, and he disappeared from their sight. They asked each other, “Were not our hearts burning within us while he talked with us on the road and opened the Scriptures to us?” (Luke 24:30-32).

We don’t know for sure what triggered their recognition of Jesus. Perhaps it was his mannerisms at the table. Maybe as he handled the bread the scars on his hands became more noticeable. In any case, their outlook changed dramatically after recognizing that this Jesus who had been dead was now alive.

Perhaps life has you discouraged. If that is the case, maybe you need to take a good close look at Jesus, our crucified and risen Savior, to help open your eyes and set your heart on fire for him once again!

We Would Like to See Jesus

christ-in-you1-2A group of people once approached Philip, a disciple of Jesus, with a simple request—“Sir, we would like to see Jesus.” (John 12:20-21).

In response to this, Jesus began to teach about his upcoming death. He had come to sacrifice his life, an act of selflessness that would produce a remarkable benefit for mankind. The crucifixion of Jesus would be such a compelling story that Jesus said it would draw people to him.

This is the Jesus that the world so desperately needs to see. Perhaps the only Jesus someone will see this week is the Jesus in you. Therefore, it is of great importance that we live sacrificial lives, not seeking our own selfish interests, but being willing to lay down our agenda for the good of someone else.

In addition to our actions, we need to lift up the crucified Jesus with our words. As we lift him up, Jesus says that he will draw them to himself.

Just like in the first century, people still want to see Jesus. Will they see him in you?

Needing Some Exercise

Vector illustration of fat man Jogging tiredThe newspaper ad read: Nordic Track for sale. $300. Hardly used. Ask for Chubbie.

You have to appreciate the truthfulness of that advertisement. If we don’t get the proper exercise, we tend to get out of shape. The Bible talks about the importance of physical training. However, it is even more important that we receive spiritual training.

Let’s make sure we get all the exercise we need, both physical and spiritual.

“For physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come.”—1 Timothy 4:8.

In Another Life

Cross-FSA woman who believed in reincarnation was trying to sway her husband over to her point of view, but he was more than a bit skeptical. He exclaimed, “You mean to tell me that I might come back in the next life as a worm!?”

“No,” she answered. “I don’t think you can be the same thing twice!”

The truth is, you don’t get to be anything twice. We have one chance in this world to live our lives to please God. There aren’t any do-overs. Hebrews 9:27-28 says, “Just as people are destined to die once, and after that to face judgment, so Christ was sacrificed once to take away the sins of many; and he will appear a second time, not to bear sin, but to bring salvation to those who are waiting for him.”

As someone once said: “Just one life, t’will soon be past. Just what’s done for Christ will last.”

Don’t Be Greedy!

gorillaA gorilla walked into an ice cream parlor and ordered a chocolate milkshake. The worker behind the counter took the $20 bill the gorilla offered and had a greedy thought. “Surely this gorilla doesn’t know anything about the value of money. I’ll short-change him and keep the rest for myself.”

So he made the milkshake and gave the gorilla $3 in change.

Trying to make small talk, the worker said, “You know, we don’t get many gorillas in here.”

The gorilla replied, “At $17 a milkshake, I’m not surprised!”

“For of this you can be sure: No immoral, impure or greedy person—such a person is an idolater—has any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God.”—Ephesians 5:5.

Participation

2-people-talking200A couple of preachers were talking to one another about their churches. “How many members do you have?” asked the first one.

“We have 200”, came the reply.

“Do they all participate?”

“Oh, yes! Half of them participate with me and the other half participate to oppose me!”

That’s not quite what we are looking for when it comes to participation in the church. We need to be involved, but we also need to be working together for a common purpose—to help the kingdom of God grow.

“Now you are the body of Christ, and each one of you is a part of it.”—1 Corinthians 12:27

“Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace.”—Ephesians 4:3

“From him the whole body, joined and held together by every supporting ligament, grows and builds itself up in love, as each part does its work.”—Ephesians 4:16

Forever Young

Dennis the MenaceIt’s hard to believe, but Dennis the Menace celebrated his 65th birthday yesterday. The mischievous Dennis has been amusing people around the world for a long, long time. There is never a dull moment for Dennis’ parents and the exasperated next door neighbor, Mr. Wilson.

It is not unusual for cartoon characters to never age. Even though he has been around for 65 years, Dennis is still just 5 years old.

However, we Christians are expected to mature with the passing of time. There is nothing amusing about childish behavior on the part of people who follow Jesus.

“When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I put the ways of childhood behind me.”—1 Corinthians 13:11.

Living at Peace

Quaker hatQuakers are known for their pacifist views, but even the most devout Quaker has his limits.

There is a story told about an old Quaker who awoke in the middle of the night to discover a burglar in his home. While the thief was looting the place, the homeowner quietly got his shotgun and tiptoed up behind him. Standing only a few feet away from the intruder, he announced his presence. “Friend,” he said calmly, “I would not harm thee for the world, but thou art standing where I am about to shoot.”

“If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone.”—Romans 12:18.

Does Anybody Really Know What Time It Is?

Daylight_Saving_clock_mainA long-time radio personality was remembering a time earlier in his career when he reminded the listeners many times during his show that they were to turn their clocks back that weekend. The only trouble was, it was the spring, when we set our clocks forward.

When the DJ arrived at work on Monday, he had two notes in his mailbox. One was from his boss, reprimanding him for his sloppy work. The other was from the local ministerial association, thanking him for getting some of their members to church two hours early!

I hope you made it to church on time today. And if you didn’t, remember that God loves you anyway!

“There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under heaven.”—Ecclesiastes 3:1.

The Meaning of the Cross

Hulk Hogan

Hulk Hogan

Former wrestler Hulk Hogan is suing Gawker Media for $100 million, claiming that his privacy was invaded and that he has suffered emotional distress since Gawker posted a video of Hogan having sex. The woman in the video happened to be the wife of his best friend at the time.

Hogan was photographed leaving the courtroom Wednesday wearing a large cross around his neck. I am not sure what the cross means to Hogan, if it means anything at all. Perhaps it is nothing more than a nice piece of jewelry.

I am concerned that many people have no clue about the true meaning of the cross. Jesus died on the cross to pay for the sins of mankind. That sacrificial death should have a significant impact on our lives. It means that we must never take sin lightly. It means that we can’t live selfishly, taking things that do not rightfully belong to us. It means that we should live humbly, mourning the sin in our lives.

At least, that’s what the cross means to me. What does it mean to you?

“For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.”—1 Corinthians 1:18.
